How the car donation process works
Start your Lancaster County car donation
Begin by telling Lancaster Motor Gifts about the vehicle you would like to donate, whether it is a car, truck, van, SUV, or other accepted vehicle. You do not need to drive it to a drop-off location. Donors across Lancaster, East Petersburg, Willow Street, New Holland, Strasburg, Quarryville, and surrounding areas can request convenient free towing. The goal is to make the process easy, especially for mission-motivated donors who want their unused vehicle to support Heritage for the Blind without adding extra errands or out-of-pocket pickup costs.
Your vehicle is picked up at no cost
After your donation is submitted, a towing professional contacts you to schedule pickup at a time that works for you. Free tow service is available throughout Lancaster County, including neighborhoods near Downtown Lancaster, Grandview Heights, Rohrerstown, Landisville, Leola, and Mountville. You will receive initial donation paperwork at or after pickup, and the vehicle is then moved into the sale process. If your car has been sitting in a driveway, garage, barn, or parking space, this step helps clear it out while preparing it to generate proceeds for Heritage for the Blind.
The vehicle is sold to create charitable proceeds
Once picked up, the donated vehicle is evaluated and sold through the appropriate resale channel. The important mission point is straightforward: 100-percent of the vehicle sale proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind, EIN 58-2164446. Lancaster Motor Gifts does not ask you to guess where the charitable value goes. Your car’s sale price becomes the basis for the funds directed to Heritage for the Blind, helping support services for Americans who are blind or visually impaired.
Proceeds help fund Heritage for the Blind services
Heritage for the Blind uses vehicle proceeds to support services for people who are blind or visually impaired. This includes helping individuals better understand and connect with government benefit programs that may be available to them, such as SSI, SSDI, LIHEAP, Section 8, Medicare Extra Help, and Medicaid. These programs can be difficult to navigate alone, especially when vision loss affects paperwork, transportation, and online access. Donors who want to explore benefit eligibility for themselves or someone they care about can visit nhftb.org/finder.
You receive the tax documentation you need
Because Heritage for the Blind is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 58-2164446, your donation may be tax-deductible if you itemize deductions on your federal tax return. For vehicles that sell for more than $500, the deduction is generally based on the gross vehicle sale price, and you should receive IRS Form 1098-C for your records. Tax situations vary, so donors should speak with a tax professional if they have specific questions. Lancaster Motor Gifts helps keep the process clear so your generosity is documented properly.
